How do we Speak to Foreigners? – Phonetic Analyses of Speech Communication between L1 and L2 Speakers of Norwegian
نویسنده
چکیده
The major goal of this study was to investigate which phonetic strategies we may actually use when speaking to L2 speakers of our mother tongue (L1). The results showed that speech rate in general was slower and that the vowel formants were closer to target values, in L2 directed speech compared to L1 directed speech in Norwegian. These properties of L2 directed speech correspond to previous findings for clear speech (e.g. Picheny et al., 1986; Krause & Braida, 2004). The results also suggest that level of experience may influence L2 directed speech; teachers of Norwegian as a second language slowed down the speech rate more than the nonteachers did, in L2 directed speech compared to L1 directed speech.

Language competition leads to reduced L1 and L2 speech fluency in bilinguals
1.1 Disfluencies in L2 speech For most of us, speaking a second language (L2) is a challenging task. Even if we call ourselves ‘fluent’ in the L2, we may at times find ourselves unsure about the grammar or at a loss for the right words. In fact, we are often not so fluent at all. The most obvious reason for this lack of fluency is a lack of proficiency, that is, a speaker has insufficient knowl...
متن کاملPhonetic encoding of coda voicing contrast and its interaction with information structure in L1 and L2 speech
This study examines the coda voicing effect in English on production of preceding vowel by comparing L1 and L2 speech. Particular attention is paid to how coda voicing contrast is encoded in temporal vs. spectral dimensions, how the effect interacts with information structure (with varying focus types), and how the use of information structure differs in L1 vs. L2. Both English (native) and Kor...
متن کاملCross–linguistic Comparison of Refusal Speech Act: Evidence from Trilingual EFL Learners in English, Farsi, and Kurdish
To date, little research on pragmatic transfer has considered a multilingual situation where there is an interaction among three different languages spoken by one person. Of interest was whether pragmatic transfer of refusals among three languages spoken by the same person occurs from L1 and L2 to L3, L1 to L2 and then to L3 or from L1 and L1 (if there are more than one L1) to L2. This study ai...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملInteraction between the native and second language phonetic subsystems
The underlying premise of this study was that the two phonetic subsystems of a bilingual interact. The study tested the hypothesis that the vowels a bilingual produces in a second language (L2) may differ from vowels produced by monolingual native speakers of the L2 as the result of either of two mechanisms: phonetic category assimilation or phonetic category dissimilation. Earlier work reveale...
